Proper cleaning is what separates an onahole that lasts 12–18 months from one that deteriorates in weeks. This guide covers everything you need to know: the right cleaning process, products to use, drying methods, and storage tips that actually work.
The good news: cleaning an onahole correctly takes about 5 minutes. Skip this step, or do it wrong, and you’ll be replacing your product far sooner than necessary.
Why Cleaning Matters
TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) — the material used in quality onaholes — is porous at the microscopic level. This means bacteria can embed in the material if not flushed out properly after each use. Symptoms of a poorly cleaned onahole include: unpleasant odor that develops within days, discoloration of the inner channel, a sticky or degraded outer surface, and potential skin irritation on next use.
None of this is inevitable with proper care. The steps below prevent all of these issues.
How to Clean an Onahole: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Rinse Immediately After Use
Don’t let the product sit. Rinse the inner channel with warm water as soon as possible after use. For open-ended onaholes, run warm water in through one end and let it flow out the other, repeatedly. For closed-end onaholes, fill from the entrance, squeeze the body of the onahole to force water through the inner channel, and repeat.
Water temperature: warm, not hot. Hot water can cause TPE to deform slightly over repeated use. Cold water is less effective at breaking down residue. Warm (body temperature range) is correct.
Step 2: Apply Toy Cleaner or Mild Soap
Squirt a small amount of toy cleaner (purpose-made antibacterial toy wash) or unscented mild soap into the inner channel. Use your finger to gently work the cleaner around the inside of the entrance area. For inner chambers you can’t physically reach, squeeze and release the body while the cleaner is inside to work it through the texture.
Gently massage the exterior as well — the outer surface also collects residue and needs cleaning.
What to use:
- Purpose-made toy cleaner (best option — pH-balanced, antibacterial, TPE-safe)
- Mild unscented dish soap (acceptable, rinse very thoroughly)
- Unscented baby wash (gentle and effective)
What NOT to use:
- Bleach or harsh disinfectants (destroy TPE)
- Alcohol-based cleaners (dry out and crack the material)
- Scented soaps (fragrance chemicals can irritate and may degrade the material)
- Boiling water (deforms and damages the internal structure)
Step 3: Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse until the water runs completely clear and there is no soap smell remaining. Soap residue in the inner channel will irritate the skin during next use and can degrade the TPE material over time. Be thorough here — it takes longer than you expect.
For closed-end onaholes, the deep chamber can trap soap. Fill, squeeze multiple times, and rinse repeatedly until you’re confident no soap remains.
Step 4: Dry Completely — This Is the Most Important Step
Incomplete drying is the single most common cause of onahole deterioration. A damp inner channel becomes a bacteria breeding ground within 12–24 hours. Mold can develop inside the inner texture in 2–3 days if moisture remains.
Drying methods that work:
- Hanging open-end down: The most passive method — prop the onahole with the opening facing down so gravity draws moisture out. Works well with good airflow.
- Drying stick with absorbent cloth: Thread a thin cloth on a chopstick or similar rod and insert gently into the inner channel to absorb interior moisture. Remove and repeat with a dry cloth until no moisture transfers.
- Microfiber towel: For the exterior — pat dry, don’t rub, to avoid surface micro-tears in the material.
Air dry for at least 1–3 hours after the cloth-drying step before storage. If you live in a humid environment, 3–4 hours minimum. Never store until you’re confident the inner channel is completely dry.
Step 5: Apply Renewal Powder Before Storage
Once fully dry, apply a light dusting of renewal powder to the outer surface. Renewal powder (purpose-made for TPE) keeps the surface smooth, skin-like, and prevents the material from becoming sticky or tacky over time.
Can’t find renewal powder? Pure cornstarch is an effective substitute. Avoid talcum powder (contains talc, which is a health concern with repeated skin contact) and baby powder that contains fragrance.
How Often Should You Clean Your Onahole?
After every single use — no exceptions. There is no safe interval that allows you to skip cleaning. The inner channel retains organic material that begins degrading almost immediately at room temperature.
If your onahole develops an odor even with regular cleaning, increase your rinse frequency and make sure you’re fully drying before storage. A persistent odor that doesn’t improve with thorough cleaning usually means the material has already been compromised — this is a sign to replace the product.
Storage: How to Keep Your Onahole in Good Condition Long-Term
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV radiation degrades TPE over time — a windowsill or sunny shelf will shorten your product’s life significantly. A drawer, closet shelf, or dedicated storage box is ideal.
Avoid storing in airtight plastic bags — any residual moisture has nowhere to escape. Use breathable fabric pouches, the original product packaging, or loose placement in a clean storage box. Some users dedicate a small lockable box specifically for adult product storage.
Keep different TPE products separate from each other. Some TPE compounds can react chemically when in direct contact for extended periods, leading to discoloration or surface degradation. If storing multiple onaholes, wrap each in a clean cloth or keep them in separate compartments.
